Happy Iranians Released After Rouhani’s tweet

Six people who were arrested in Iran for dancing in a YouTube video to Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy” have been freed after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani defended them in his ‪#‎tweet‬.

On Wednesday a Twitter account operated by Rouhani’s aides tweeted:

‪#‎Happiness‬ is our people’s right. We shouldn’t be too hard on behaviors caused by joy.” 29/6/2013

The tweet is believed by many to reference the incident.

Rouhani’s appears to reference a previous speech he delivered on 26 June last year.

Giving hints he would consider loosening some of the restrictions imposed by the country’s “morality police”, he said: “Happiness is our people’s right.

Rouhani’s tweet is a very obvious allusion to the “Happy” arrests, and a reminder of his own campaign promise. Plus, there are a lot of pro-Rouhani papers and they all condemned the arrests.
