Iranian President Hassan Rouhani arrived in France on Wednesday for an official visit during which he is expected to sign a host of commercial deals.

The visit, the first to France by an Iranian president since 1999, is the second leg of a trip signalling Tehran’s rapprochement with Europe after sanctions were lifted against the Islamic Republic.

Rouhani flew in from Italy, where he sealed industrial deals worth between 15 billion euros and 17 billion euros ($18.5 billion). After arriving from Rome, Rouhani and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron.

Rouhani then hosted leaders of France’s business community in his Paris hotel soon after arriving Wednesday from Rome.

“We don’t see any obstacles for companies that would want to come and invest in Iran,” Rouhani, speaking through an interpreter, told a delegation of French business leaders. “Iran is ready for investments.”

Airbus Chief Executive Fabrice Bregier, who was part of the French delegation, said that he held talks this month in Tehran with government and Iran Air officials that could lead to the rapid sale of aircraft.

“We are at the disposal of our Iranian counterparts to help renew the fleet,” Bregier said. Iran urgently needs modern, safer and less-polluting airliners after decades of being unable to obtain spare parts or new models due to sanctions.

After starting his trip to Paris by meeting some 20 company executives, Rouhani is due to deliver a speech to business leaders on Thursday at a Franco-Iranian forum, where Iranian ministers will outline their plans.

Several agreements are due to be announced after a meeting with President Francois Hollande.

Iranian officials have said they are poised to agree on a deal for Airbus aircraft. Carmakers Peugeot and Renault may also agree contracts.

Iranian President also met with President of the French Senate Gerard Larcher on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Rouhani noted that Tehran and Paris can cooperate to help solve regional and international problems and take effective measures to promote peace and stability throughout the world.

President Rouhani highlighted that the threat of dangerous terrorist groups who are wreaking havoc across the globe can only be neutralized through closer international and multilateral ties.

The visiting president also offered condolences over the Paris attacks which claimed the lives of 130 people in November, saying, “These terrorist actions show that terrorism is a dangerous pandemic that threatens the whole world, including European cities.”

In his turn, Larcher said that the removal of sanctions is a suitable opportunity for the swift improvement of relations between the two countries, and that France is optimistic about the outcome of the historic visit by the Iranian president.
